Skittles sides are required
SKITTLES teams from the Bromsgrove and Droitwch areas are being called in to action in a bid to secure their places in the draw for this year's Blackthorn British Skittle Championships.
The competition has seen a wealth of teams from the county enter in its four year history with Worcester's Highwaymen being the most successful in recent years, reaching the grand finals only to fall at the first hurdle to eventual quarter-finalists Bath City.
But now time is running out for entries into the championship's fifth anniversary and Worcestershire is short on representation.
On entry into the championship, teams will start their campaign in May with regional group matches and, if successful, will proceed through to a series of knockout rounds.
The victorious last 16 in each competition - men's, ladies and mixed will qualify for the grand finals which take place at the Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday, September 20.
The winners and runners-up in each of the three categories will receive a share of the £5,250 prize money up for grabs as well as a selection of Blackthorn goodies to boot.
Another Worcester side, Thunderbirds, have entered the prestigious competition every year since its beginnings in 2004 but have yet to make a significant impact on claiming the top prize.
They made the Grand Finals at Weston-Super-Mare in 2005 but fell at the first hurdle. This year they intend to put that right: "We're having a good run in Division 1 of our local league," said team secretary Trevor Williams. "Although we have lost our last couple of matches, we're getting into Championship mode reaching the semi-final of the E&E Cup which we play in a couple of week's time.
The nucleus of the team has been in existence for years and we have one or two new signings which we hope will give us a boost this summer."
Any teams requiring further information or wishing to enter should contact the organisers, Shoot Out Club on 01803 210210 or visit their website at www.shootoutclub.co.uk/bbsc.
The closing date for entries has been extended until April 7, therefore don't delay - call now and get your team entered into the biggest skittling event of the year.
