Concern growing over library service

A PARISH council is putting pressure on County Hall for improvements to their library service with an on-site temporary building.

Barry Hodgson, clerk to Cofton Hackett Parish Council, has written to Philip Gretton, cabinet member responsible for adult and community services, concerning a perceived "lack of support" that the village is receiving over its library service.

The letter, written on behalf of parish council chairman Richard Deeming and councillors, expresses a "growing doubt" that the current, or any type of, mobile library service could "provide the hours of coverage of the old building that you promised."

As reported in the Bromsgrove Advertiser/Messenger, the majority of residents present at a July meeting on this issue, called after the county council was forced to close the previous static library last spring, supported a replacement on-site service.

However, the county council opted to cover Cofton Hackett with a mobile library.

The letter points out that councillors had received many complaints from "disgruntled residents" over the lack of service and claims the present mobile library missed three visits during February, and is only trying to cover two afternoons, for two hours per week.

Councillors are hoping that the introduction of a temporary cabin could cover Cofton Hackett until a new library is built from section 106 monies, provided from the Longbridge redevelopment.

Councillor Gretton, (Con-Redditch South) commented: "We recognise the current mobile service would not be as effective as the previous static library. There are currently no plans for a static library service."
