Local hall could be lost if it isn’t used

I HAVE have been a regular user of Amphlett Hall for 30 years and I am constantly amazed to discover that many Bromsgrove people do not know of its existence.

It was built in the early 1950's with money left in the will of Mrs Amphlett for the use of the elderly people of Bromsgrove.

In 2007 the council spent £72,000 to upgrade the facility and bring it up to scratch on modern health and safety requirements. In 2000 the Rotary Club spent a lot of money installing raised flower beds so that the elderly users could indulge in a little gardening if they so wished.

In 2008 usage has dropped to an average of 15 hours per week. We know that more than 25 per cent of the population of Bromsgrove are over 55, which should make it possible to fill Amphlett Hall on a regular basis.

Why is this facility, which is in the centre of town near the bus station, with excellent facilities, not used?

It has three activity rooms, three toilets (one disabled), fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and parking for disabled users.

If we don't use it we will lose it. If it does not receive sufficient income from rentals it cannot be maintained at its present level.

The Monday Bridge Club is currently trying to look after the raised beds and bring a little colour to Crown Close. I think that it is the job of the council to publicise this facility, in their many publications that tell us how wonderful they are.

If the council did not intend to promote this hall they should not have spent so much money on it.
