Football consortium's waiting game

THE consortium hoping to buy Bromsgrove Rovers have withdrawn to the touchline - but only temporarily.

They claim they have no option but to bide their time, because the present owner and club chairman, Tom Herbert, has failed to respond or communicate with them.

"However, we will consider putting in a fresh bid if circumstances change, which we believe may happen shortly given the current uncertainties over finances and management of the club," said consortium spokesman and former club secretary, Phil Baker from Marlbrook.

The consortium, fronted by five ex Rovers' directors and Bromsgrove Rovers Supporters Society was launched in the spring. The aim was to buy the club to ensure it is never again controlled by one person.

The consortium have to date made several undisclosed offers to Mr Herbert. And the spectre of the Rovers' Victoria Ground being developed has again been raised, this time by the consortium.

Members believe there may be a link between the ground and plans to build a supermarket directly opposite on Birmingham Road, said to be in the process of being drawn up by Sainsbury's. Their company spokeswoman said they were keen to come to Bromsgrove and as soon as they can confirm details an announcement will be made.

The notion the club may vacate its home of over a century has been heightened by the fact it has plans to build a sports complex in Burcot Lane and has recently acquired training facilities in Hagley.

"We are investigating this aspect," said Mr Baker. "The people of Bromsgrove deserve to know what is going on."

When asked about Sainsbury's and a possible link with the Victoria Ground a spokeswoman for the district council, which holds it in trust, would only say: "Covenants state the land must revert to an open space if no longer used for football."

Yesterday Mr Herbert reiterated he has no intention of selling the club and questioned whether the consortium can back up its comments with facts.

The consortium is arranging a public meeting for the week commencing August 4.
